It was a gathering of 1400 people — mostly women and a few brave men — for four days from February 27 to March 1st in Washington DC. It was the World Conference on Women’s Shelters sponsored by the National Network to End Domestic Violence and the Global Network of Women’s Shelters.
Former U.S. President Bill Clinton spoke (See video) and actress Reese Witherspoon was there to give out Avon Foundation Communications Awards: Speaking Out About Violence Against Women (See video).
One of the awards went to Cut, a video starring English actress Keira Knightley to raise awareness about domestic violence. (CAUTION! This video has graphic violence in it.)
What an amazing experience to meet women from all over the world who are doing this important work on ending violence against women! I was so inspired and honored to be with such a group.
The best part of the conference for me was the workshop on Cause of Death: Woman, a journalistic effort by three women from Sweden which features my niece Maggie’s story as well as the story of the My Avenging Angel Workshops™ and several of the survivors from the Archangel group including Vanessa. It was a great opportunity for us to spotlight our journey from victim to survivor to “thriver!”

We are thrivers indeed and word of our work to help women thrive is spreading worldwide!
